What are the eID Password Requirements?

This article provides a breakdown of password requirements for Okta.

Troubleshooting/Resolution

Here are the general requirements for setting a password for your eID at mylogin.jmu.edu:

  • It is at least 16 characters long.
  • It contains at least 1 lowercase letter.
  • It contains at least 1 uppercase letter.
  • It contains at least 1 numeric character.
  • It contains at least 1 special character.
  • It is not similar to any of your previous passwords (Okta maintains a history).
  • It does not contain your first name (see note below).
  • It does not contain your last name (see note below).
  • It does not contain your eID.
Additional Information or Notes

Note: The system will not allow your password to contain your name(s). If your first or last name is only one letter, any password containing that letter will be rejected.
