Overview
Windows display settings on computer connected to docking station indicate more external monitors than are actually connected to docking station.
Environment
Dell docking stations
Troubleshooting/Resolution
This is often caused by having additional, non-needed, video cables plugged in to the Dock. Unplugging the additional cables from the dock should resolve this issue.
If this does not resolve the issue, try updating the drivers and software for the Dell dock through Dell Command Update:
- Click the magnifying glass in the Windows Taskbar, and search for and open Dell Command Update
- If not listed, clear your search and instead search for and open Software Center
- Click Dell Command Update in the software list, and select install
- While the computer is connected to the Dock, select Check. This will scan your computer as well as the dock for available driver and software updates.
- Ensure that critical and recommended are checked, and select install.
- Note: The installation process may take some time, and require one or more restarts. Be sure to save any files you are working on beforehand
- Once completed, restart your computer, and check to see if the additional monitor is still listed. If so, please reach out to the JMU IT Help Desk.
