Purpose and Overview
JMU Network Services provides the wireless network to support the use of laptops, mobile devices, and other unwired devices on the JMU Data Network. There are three main wireless networks that you will see on campus:
- JMU-Official-Wireless: This is the main wireless network for students, faculty, and staff; log in to this network using your e-ID and password
- JMU-Guest-Wireless: This is the wireless network for guests of the University who are sponsored by a faculty or staff member
- eduroam: This is a wireless network supported by a large number of universities around the world and allows you to connect using your e-ID and password or login information from another participating university
Eligibility and Constraints
- JMU-Official-Wireless
- Eligibility:
- Students, faculty, and staff with an active e-ID and password
- Constraints:
- For a device to connect to JMU-Official-Wireless it must support:
- WPA2-Enterprise/802.1X
- TLS 1.2
- Devices that do not meet the above requirements are not supported on JMU-Official-Wireless
- JMU-Guest-Wireless
- Eligibility:
- Guests of the University who are sponsored by a faculty or staff member
- Guest Wireless accounts can be created here
- Constraints:
- This network provides basic internet access and access to certain university resources is limited
- By default, Guest Wireless accounts are created for a two-week period from the date of creation
- All Guest Wireless accounts can be extended once, for two additional weeks, by submitting a ticket through the button to the right
- Extensions beyond the second two-week period can be requested, but will be reviewed and approved or denied by Network Services
- In the description of the ticket, provide the reasoning for your extension request
- For security purposes, when an account is extended beyond the two-week extension, the password will change
- eduroam
- Eligibility:
- Users whose home school participates in the eduroam network
