Overview
Hardware service at James Madison University ensures faculty and staff have access to reliable computing devices and support for their academic and administrative work. This service encompasses the deployment, management, and life cycle support of laptops, desktops, and peripherals. This service relies on close collaboration between centrally managed IT support and department-specific IT staff to align on common standards and best practices while allowing flexibility for departmental needs.
JMU is an authorized service provider for Dell and Apple computers. Information Technology facilitates hardware repair service for JMU-owned Dell and Apple equipment if the unit is tagged with an Equipment Service Number (ESN).
Who can use this Service?
Most of JMU's hardware services are provided only to JMU faculty and staff however purchase of hardware through the JMU Bookstore is available to faculty, staff, and students.
How can I get this Service?
Departmental Purchases/JMU-Owned Devices:
- Available through JMU Procurement Office
- Requests for repairs should be submitted through the IT Help Desk by phone at (540) 568-3555.
Personal Purchases:
- Faculty and staff - may purchase a computer through the JMU Bookstore Computer Purchase Program. Interest free loans are available for qualifying faculty and staff members. For more information, contact the Madison CyberZone at the JMU Bookstore at (540) 568-3989.
- Unfortunately the IT Help Desk is unable to support hardware issues regarding personal devices. However, the Madison CyberZone Service Center at the JMU Bookstore offers repair services for Apple and Dell computers.

Quick-start FAQ's
Features:
- Request a Device ESN: If a purchased Mac or Dell computer does not already have a blue or white Equipment Service Number (ESN) tag, a request should be put in for the device to be tagged so that it can be added to the list of JMU-Owned devices.
- Software and Security Tools: Access institutional software and updates through JMU Self Service (MacOS) or Software Center (Windows)
- Recycle or Surplus of a Device: Submit an EICR request through Procurement when a device's life cycle has reached its end.
