Printing and Related Services

Overview

Information Technology provides network printing for faculty, staff, student employees and affiliates.  A networked printer allows multiple computers to print to a single printer.

Who can use this Service?

JMU faculty, staff, student employees and affiliates.

How can I get this Service?

JMU does not support wireless local printers. JMU-Owned desktops and laptops connected to JMU-Official-Wireless can however, print to the managed network printers.

If you recently purchased a printer to be added as a network printer, please submit a request through a Printer Setup Request to have an ESN tag assigned and the printer setup.

Printing Recommendations and Considerations:

For cost effectiveness, it is strongly recommended to purchase a Laser/Toner printer for general use. Ink jet printers will not have as long of a life span and are considered non-repairable by our repair partners.

In situations where a printer is expected to be used for a single computer and connected locally (via USB cable), this would not require an ESN Tag or IT management. However, if the purchase will total over ~$500, it is recommended to purchase or lease a network printer for the department. Below is a list of recommended brands and example models for printer purchases to use as a reference when looking to purchase or replace for your department:

Brother and Cannon:

  • Brother and Cannon printers can be purchased through Daly Computers or CDW-G
  • An example of suggested models would be Brother’s HL-L3280CDW or Canon’s Image Class MF653cdw

HP:

  • HP printers can be purchased through Daly Computers or CDW-G.
    • An example of suggested models would be HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw
  • HP printers should not be purchased with the "HP+" or "HP Plus" configuration option.
  • If you are unsure whether the printer you would like to purchase has this option, please reach out to Procurement Services. Models with the "E" acronym at the end of the model number include the HP+ service.

Quick-start FAQ's

What is the turnaround time to process my request?

Information Technology strives to contact the requester within 3 business days. Variables such as high-volume periods (such as the start of a semester) can influence turnaround time.

Why are wireless printers not supported?

Due to general security concerns, many types of wireless devices such as printers are not able to be connected to JMU-Owned devices as it is hard to monitor traffic coming and going to wireless devices. That and the fact that wireless printers are generally less reliable and every device has different methods of connecting wirelessly make it unfeasible for JMU-IT to assist with these devices.

Are students able to use JMU printing services?

Student Employees are permitted to use JMU printing services but unfortunately Students that do not have an employee role are not. Students are, however, able to take advantage of JMU's Pay-for-Print service across campus
