How to Install SPSS on Windows

Overview

This article will go over the installation and activation of SPSS for Windows devices

Environment

Windows computers, SPSS Statistics/SPSS Licensing Wizard, JMU Libraries software page, SPSS Amos

Troubleshooting/Resolution

Note: Any prior installations of SPSS will need to be uninstalled prior to installing and activating SPSS 30. (This is critical, SPSS will not override an old installation) Additionally, you will only need to install SPSS 30 or SPSS Amos and not both.

  1. Open a web browser to JMU Libraries SPSS Instructions
  2. Enter your eID and password
  3. Scroll down to the Downloads (ZIP format): section and click on the SPSS software appropriate for your device to begin the download
  4. Go to File Explorer (the folder icon)
  5. Double-click to open the Downloads folder
  6. Double-click the spss_statistics... folder to open
  7. Double-click the SS_Client... file to start the file extraction
  8. Click Yes to the message "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?  IBM SPSS Statistics ...", or If prompted, enter your administrator username and password to begin the installation (for a personal device this is likely just the username and password you use to sign into your computer)
  9. The IBM Install Wizard begins, click Next
  10. Click I accept the terms of this license agreement under License Information, and click Next
  11. Leave the selection set to Yes and click Next
  12. Select I accept the terms of this license agreement on the License Agreement screen then click Next
  13. Select I accept the terms of this license agreement on the Software License Agreement screen then click Next
  14. Click Next on the Destination Folder screen
  15. Click Install on the Ready to Install the Program screen, and a progress bar will appear
  16. Click Finish on the Install Wizard Completed screen (ensure that you have a check in the box Start SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard Now)
  17. The IBM SPSS Statistics Licensing begins
  18. Leave the option Authorized user license selected and click Next
  19. Copy the code after the version number you installed (i.e V 30) from the JMU Libraries SPSS Instructions under JMU’s Single User Activation Keys for SPSS (Extends license to 8/30/20**):  and click Next
  20. Click Next when you see Authorization succeeded
  21. Click Finish when License Completed
  22. Click Finish
