Overview
This article aims to provide information and process on how to activate a deactivated data jack in a room or office.
Environment
The need to activate a data jack could happen in any room/building across campus. When moving offices, rearranging a room and moving hardware around, through a multitude of needs.
Troubleshooting/Resolution
An Ethernet data jack may need to be activated by Telecom if the port has been disabled/not used recently. In order to get the port activated, Telecom can be contacted by calling (540) 568-6471 or emailing telecom@jmu.edu. Note that Telecom will need the following:
- Building
- Room number
- Data jack number/letter (Note: Each wall plate should have a label that states the room number and data jack number or letter)

Additional Information or Notes
Before contacting Telecom about the port, please ensure the following:
- A working Ethernet cable is available and has been tested with a known working device and data jack
- The Ethernet port on the device functions properly with a known working cable and data jack
- If you cannot test the cable or the device’s Ethernet port, please contact the Help Desk.
