Troubleshooting/Resolution
What is a Yubikey?
A Yubikey is a small, portable device that fits on most standard key chain rings. It is used as an alternative to the Okta Verify mobile app for a situation where you may not have a mobile device present. Yubikeys plug into a USB port on the device that you are using and required a single tap from your finger to authenticate (note: Yubikeys do not register your fingerprint, they just need a tap of any sort). They are secure in much the same way that a house key is secure, as long as you are the only one who possesses the key, it is secure. If the key is ever lost please follow the instructions here.
Do I need a Yubikey?
Not necessarily but if you do not have a mobile device capable of running the Okta Verify app, you will need a Yubikey to authenticate to JMU systems. Even if your phone does run Okta Verify, you may want a Yubikey as a backup device in case you damage your phone, get a new device, or to use while traveling (particularly outside the US).
Will I use a Yubikey all the time?
No, most people will use a Yubikey as a backup device to their smartphone.
How can I get a Yubikey?
Please see How to Obtain a Yubikey to learn about Yubikey versions, view photos, and find out how to get one.
