Overview
This article will go over the process of requesting a new immutable eID. (This process can not be undone or reverted.) Anyone at JMU with a legacy eID (a name-based eID issued prior to March 17, 2025) may request a new eID. If your eID was assigned after March 17, 2025, you have an immutable eID that cannot be changed.

Additional Information or Notes
Before requesting a new eID, be aware of the following:
- If you request an eID change, you will receive a new immutable (permanent) eID to replace your current eID. Once you receive an immutable eID, you cannot change your eID again, and the process cannot be reversed.
- Your new eID will consist of a series of letters and numbers that are generated randomly (e.g., A4XE7B). You cannot choose your new eID, and it is not based on your name or any other personal information.
- Your eID is always the first part of your JMU email address. If your eID is A4XE7B, then your JMU email is A4XE7B@jmu.edu (employee) or A4XE7B@dukes.jmu.edu (student). Therefore, if you change your eID, your email address must also change.
- A request to change an eID is separate from any request to change your legal name; JMU no longer requires a legal name change to facilitate an eID change.
