Blocked access to an attachment

Overview

This article describes how to change the type of file extension to allow access to an email attachment that was previously blocked.

Environment

Microsoft File Explorer, email

Troubleshooting/Resolution

To receive a blocked message from a sender, have the sender rename the file extension from its original extension (e.g. a .zip file extension) to .jmu and resend.
Once the file is received, save the file to the computer and rename it back to its original extension (e.g. from .jmu to .zip).

To view the file extension:

Windows 10:

  1. Select the Windows icon.
  2. Search for File extension, then click on the option Show or Hide File Extensions.
  3. Click OK.

Windows 11:

  1. Select the Windows icon.
  2. Search for File extension, then click on the option Show or Hide File Extensions.
  3. Under File Explorer, select ON next to Show File Extensions.
  4. Select OK.

MacOS 10.14 and later

  1. Select the Finder application located on the left-hand side of your Dock.
  2. On the Menu bar at the very top of your screen and to the right of the Apple logo, Select the Finder tab, then select Settings.
  3. Click the Advanced icon (looks like two gears).
  4. Check the Show all file extensions box. All file extensions will now be visible both on the desktop and in open windows.
