I Received a Suspicious or Spam Email

Overview

Learn what to do if you've received a suspicious email to your JMU email. If you receive a spam email or one that looks suspicious, you can move it to your Junk Email folder or delete it. If you are receiving multiples of a certain type of spam email, you can forward the message as an attachment to Spam@jmu.edu. If you believe the email is malicious, forward it as an attachment to Abuse@jmu.edu.

How to forward a message as an attachment in Outlook on the web:

  1. On a computer, open a web browser and navigate to outlook.office.com and log in.
  2. Click New message to open a new email message window.
  3. Drag the message you want to forward into the body of the new message
  4. Fill out the To line and Subject line.
  5. Click Send.

How to forward a message as an attachment in Outlook Windows:

  1. Double-click the message to open the Message tab.
  2. Click More  (•••) of the ribbon in the top right corner.
  3. Select Other reply actions.
  4. Click Forward as Attachment.
  5. Fill out the To line and Subject line.
  6. Click Send.

How to forward a message as an attachment in Outlook on Mac:

  1. Press your keyboard ​​​​​​'s CTRL button, then click on the email message.
  2. Click Forward as Attachment.
  3. Fill out the To line and Subject line.
  4. Click Send.
Additional Information or Notes

If you click on a phishing message, you should immediately do the following:

  • Forward the message as an attachment to Abuse@jmu.edu.
  • If you provided credentials, update your password through the MyLogin portal.
  • Contact the IT Help Desk; a phone call is the fastest method 540-568-3555.
