Overview
As part of our continuous commitment to modernizing campus technology and enhancing data security, JMU IT is transitioning to cloud-first data solutions. Effective September 15, 2026, Endpoint Services will no longer perform manual local data backups during new computer setups or system reimages. Instead, user-level endpoint backups are being phased out in favor of secure, centrally managed cloud storage.

Additional Information
To ensure files are always protected, JMU IT strongly encourages the use of Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft SharePoint/Teams. Before doing so, we also encourage you to ensure you are following the Data Storage Standard to keep your data in the right place. Transitioning your data to these platforms offers significant benefits:
- Enhanced Reliability: data is protected against physical hardware failure or loss.
- Universal Access: access your files from any device, anywhere.
- Real-Time Backups: files sync automatically without requiring a campus network or VPN connection.
We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for you. If you need assistance moving your data to the cloud or preparing for a computer refresh, please reach out to your department's Technology Coordinator or the IT Help Desk for additional information or assistance.
FAQ's
Can I still have my data backed up or transferred to a new device?
Yes, you can still request to have either your data backed up and retained or transferred to a new or different device. Be aware, the request will be delayed and moved to the bottom of the requests.
Why are we moving to Cloud Storage?
Ensuring your data is stored in applications like Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft SharePoint/Teams allows for your data to be recovered and protected in the event of a hardware issue, as well as provides an easier method of access. Additionally, this sets the groundwork for future implementation for Microsoft Autopilot, which will allow for a faster and more efficient reimage or setup process.
I have never used OneDrive before, would like help setting it up.
Certainly! You can submit a request through the IT Service Portal where you can be contacted and assisted in both understanding how OneDrive works, and how it works best for you. Additionally, you can look through our Knowledge Base to see more information on how to set up OneDrive in the meantime.
