How to Receive and/or Update Emergency Notification Contact Methods

Emergency Notification system, a JMU Alert is sent to the following:
During a campus emergency, JMU will distribute information to the campus community utilizing several methods, a few are described below.  For a comprehensive list of all methods, see the Official JMU Communications website https://www.jmu.edu/safetyplan/JMU_communications.shtml:

  1. On-campus outdoor siren and PA systems will send an audible siren/broadcast message
  2. Email will be sent to all students, faculty, staff and affiliates who have enrolled for emergency notifications through MyMadison
  3. Text message/voice message will be sent to the cell phones of all individuals who have enrolled for emergency notifications through MyMadison
  4. Display on Computing Lab Desktops:  Alert will be posted on the monitor of the Computer Lab desktops. 
    • If it is a test, it will state something to this nature; "This is a TEST of the Alertus Emergency Notification system. NO ACTION IS NEEDED.
    • In a real emergency, this message will contain important alert information.  
    • The alert will take over the entire display until dismissed by clicking the ack button or the timer runs out (default is 10 minutes)

To enroll for Emergency Notifications:
Students:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to MyMadison and log in with your JMU eID, password and Multi-factor authentication
  2. Under the menu, click Student
  3. Click on Student Center
  4. Scroll down to the Personal Information section
  5. Select edit Preferred Phone Number
  6. Follow the instructions for Emergency Notification Authorization in the middle of the page
  7. After completing the required section, check the Information Validated box and then Save your changes.

Employees:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to MyMadison and log in with your JMU eID, password and Multi-factor authentication
  2. Click the Employee tab
  3. Under Employee Personal Information, click Phone Numbers
  4. Enter your phone numbers
  5. Follow the instructions for Emergency Notification Authorization 
  6. After completing the required section, check the Information Validated box and then Save your changes.
