Overview

This article will go over how to invite a non-JMU account to a JMU owned Teams channel or chat.

Environment

Microsoft Teams

Troubleshooting/Resolution

Yes, you can add guests from any domain to a Microsoft Team or chat (i.e. @gmail.com, @gmu.edu, etc):

  1. Type in an external user's whole email address (that doesn't already have a guest account) in the add members dialog,
  2. Sometimes, instead of "Add as a guest" you will only see a list of already existing accounts that have similar names.
    • For example if you tried to add Dolley Madison's home outlook address (madisodp@outlook.com) and she already had a JMU email account, it would only show her JMU email account (madisodp@jmu.edu).  This can also happens when starting a Teams chat.
  3. To resolve this, you have to copy and paste the whole email in at once in to the invite.
