How to Upload, Download, Share, Request & Send files with Serv-U web client

Web Client used to upload and download files into folders with a web browser and share/send to other users that have access to this departmental folder
 

  1. On the Client Options Window, select Web Client to Upload and download files and click OK, Continue.
  2. The Home directory page will show a list of your department files and directories 

 
To Download a file

  1. Select the file from the HOME directory or select a folder where the file is located.  For example, the file to download is located in the Stuart Doc folder.  
  2. Click the file desired for download and click the Download button.
  3. The Opening filename window appears, and select what to do with the file.
  4. Select Open with to open the file in the selected application.  The file can then be saved through the application’s File/save procedure.
  5. Select Save file to place the file in the download area of the browser.
  6. Click Do this automatically for files like this from now on if you wish to open with or save the file as chosen each time.

 
To Upload a File:

  1. To upload a file, click the Upload button.
  2. On the Upload Window, select Browse and find the file that you want to upload.
  3. After selecting a file to upload, you will see the file listed beside the Browse… button
  4. Click the Upload button.
  5. You will see a status window showing the transfer process
  6. Click Close to exit the window.
  7. If the file already exists, you will get the options below where you can select to overwrite the file or not:

 

  • The files that are uploaded can be deleted with the Delete button
  • The More Actions button will give you the options listed below:
    • The Parent Directory button will place you in the upper level home directory.
    • The New Directory button will create a new folder/directory in the current location. 
    • The Help button at the top right of the screen is for further help.
  • Logout by selecting your name at the top right of the screen and then click the Log out button

 

File Sharing Option

  • File Sharing is used to temporarily share files with users that don’t have a Serv-U account or other users at James Madison University.

Common use case scenarios for File Sharing are:

  • Request a file from someone by sending a link to a page, where the other party can easily upload to it.
  • Send a file internally to another person at our university.
  • Send a file outside of James Madison University using a link in an email.
  • Search for file shares or files among existing sent, requested, or both sent and requested shares using the search field.

 

  • On the Client Options window, select File Sharing and click OK, Continue.  

 

To Request Files

  1. From the File Sharing dashboard, click Request Files from the Home menu bar towards the top to display the Request Files from Guest User screen
    1. Note:  Request Files allows you to receive a file from someone by sending a link to a page where the other party can upload the file.  The user receives a link in an email that grants them access to upload files.
  2. Enter comments if necessary
  3. Under My Contact Information, enter your name and email address
  4. Under Guest Address:
    1. Select Automatically send the upload link to the guest user(s) in an email.  Note: If this is not selected, you can send the link out manually.
    2. To be notified when files have been sent and to obtain a link to send manually, select Send me an email copy with the upload link
    3. Enter the email address of the users that need to receive this file share (multiple entries are separated by commas)
  5. Under Serv-U Access Link Expiration: The Expiration date has been set by administrator and cannot be changed.
  6. Under Other Settings, select Require the guest to enter a password to access Serv-U, and enter or generate the password (you have the less secure option to Include the password in the email).
  7. Click Send Request
  8. A confirmation window appears and click Done

 

To Send Files

  1. From the File Sharing dashboard, click Send Files from the Home menu bar towards the top to display the Send Files to Guest User screen
  2. Enter comments if necessary
  3. Under My Contact Information, enter your name and email address
  4. Under Guest Address
    1. Select Automatically send the download link to the guest user(s) in an email.  Note: If this is not selected, you can send the link out manually
    2. To be notified when files have been sent and to obtain a link to send manually, select Send me an email copy with the download link
    3. Enter the email address of the users that need to receive this file share (multiple entries are separated by commas)
  5. Under Serv-U Access Link Expiration
    1. Expiration date has been set by administrator and cannot be changed
    2. To require the guest to enter a password before downloading the files, select this option, and enter or generate the password (you have the less secure option to Include the password in the email).
  6. Click Next
  7. Click the Browse button, to select files to send to the user from your computer or from your Serv-U account, then click Upload
  8. The File Upload Confirmation tells when the file uploads were complete, who the link was sent to, when it expires, the URL of the link should you wish to manually send a link to others, and the names of the files that were uploaded and sent.
  9. Click Done and it returns you to the File Sharing Dashboard
