How do I install and license NI LabView?

Download Instructions

  1. Go to https://support.cise.jmu.edu/installs/NI/Web Installers/ and log in with your JMU eID
  2. Windows users will need to download and run the Web Installer:  ni-software-platform-bundle_21.5_suite_online.exe
    1. This small application will allow you to install any application from the LabView suite of programs via the Internet.
    2. NI LabView 2023 and later are not compatible with the MyDAQ
  3. Mac users will need to download and run the DMG installer:  LabVIEW2023Q3Full.dmg
    1. This includes individual installs for LabView and the LabView Runtime Engine
    2. Mac versions of NI LabView do not support the MyDAQ or other hardware

Windows Installation Process

  1. If you already have LabView Installed, please uninstall all prior products before proceeding! (https://www.ni.com/.../uninstall-national-instruments-software-or-drivers-using-ni-pack.html)
  2. Open the web installer you downloaded. The Software Platform Bundle will install the NI Package Manager before continuing with LabView
  3. You may choose to disable Fast Windows Startup if you wish - this is not required
  4. By default, the installer will select: LabVIEW, NI-DAQmx, NI-488.2, NI-VISA, PXI Platform Services, and NI-Sync
    1. At a minimum, you will also want to add DAQExpress, NI-Sync, and NI-ELVISmx
    2. You may select as many products as you like, but installing all packages will take over 80GB of space. The minimum install will take roughly 14GB
    3. You can run the web installer later to add any additional products
  5. Accept the license agreements and proceed with the install
    1. This may take a half hour or more depending upon your product selection
  6. After installation has completed, you will be asked to log in with an NI Account
    1. If you do not already have an account, click Create a user account from the installer
  7. Once you have logged in, choose to Enter a serial number: D11L1065421
    1. Not all products are covered under student licensing
  8. Click Finish and ignore any remaining activations

Mac Installation Process

  1. Open the file you downloaded earlier (LabVIEW2023Q3Full.dmg) with Finder
    1. The LabView Runtime Engine is available under Extras
    2. Driver support on Mac is limited to NI-488.2 and NI-VISA, and must be downloaded separately (https://ni.com/en-us/support/downloads/drivers.html)
  2. If you receive a message that the installer "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software"
    1. Open the System Preferences app, go to Security & Privacy, and chose Open Anyway
